Moments, June 15

Thrilled to have newEar and Michael Hall play the full, complete premiere of “Moments,” part of the UMKC Composition Workshop. Details for program here.

Moments was composed for trio featuring Michael and part of a series of new work that I have been composing since last summer.  A quote by  Confusius was the premise for the project: “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.”

New commission

Excited to compose for Dirk Amrein.  My new piece will premiere in fall 2014 as part of a three day residency at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.  Dirk and his duo partner Jürg Henneberger will be in Kansas City September 3-5 from Germany.

Moments from Methods

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” –Confucius

Each method is accompanied by an improvisation, which is loosely notated and relies on improvisation by the performer/soloist. Note the distinction between pauses and breaks. Some sections are to be played continuously, while others include short pauses and the three larger sections have a formal break.
